Ingredients:

  • 2.2 kg Mackintosh or Macown apples
  • Grated zest of 1 orange
  • Grated zest of 1 lemon
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

    For the top layer:

  • 1.5 cups of flour
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 tbsp. light brown sugar (compacted)
  • 1/2 tsp coarse salt
  • 1 cup oatmeal
  • 230g chilled unsalted butter, diced

Preparation:

  1. Preheat oven to 180C. Grease a 23x35x5 cm oval baking pan with butter.
  2. Peel the apples, remove the core, and cut into large wedges. Mix the apples with the zest, juice, sugar, and spices. Place in a baking dish.
  3. For the top layer, combine the flour, two types of sugar, salt, oats, and chilled butter in the bowl of an electric mixer using the paddle attachment. Mix on low speed until the mixture begins to crumble and the butter begins to form clumps. Spread evenly over the apples.
  4. Place the crisp on a baking sheet and bake for 1 hour, until the top is golden brown and the apples are bubbling. Serve warm.

You can add in apple pie walnuts.
