Mozzarella cheese appetizer with honey and figs topcook.tomathouse.com
Ingredients:
- 6 sheets of phyllo dough
- 170 g smoked mozzarella, cut into 6 equal pieces
- 225 g dried figs, quartered (stems removed)
- 3/4 cup honey, plus a little more
- Vegetable oil for frying
- 3 tsp black sesame seeds
Preparation:
- In a large frying pan, heat vegetable oil over medium heat to 180°C.
Place one sheet of phyllo on a dry work surface. Place one slice of cheese 13 cm from the top narrow edge of the sheet.
Fold the narrow end over the cheese, leaving 2.5 cm between the folded edge and the cheese. Then fold one of the long sides over, then the other, again leaving 2.5 cm between the folded edge and the cheese. Then fold the cheese over, again leaving 2.5 cm between the folded sheet and the cheese.
Continue folding the sheets until you have a 9x10 cm "envelope." Do the same with the remaining pieces of cheese and phyllo.
Fry the cheese and phyllo envelopes, 2-3 at a time, in oil until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side. Drain on a baking sheet lined with paper towels.
- Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, heat the figs and honey over low heat until the honey is warm. Let it simmer until the cheese wraps are cooked through.
To serve, place 1 cheese wrapper on a plate. Top with figs and drizzle with honey. Sprinkle with black sesame seeds and serve immediately.
